Early Broad Beans and Preparing for the Season Ahead

This winter, we took a big step forward in our growing setup by establishing our first large polytunnel. Having this protected space has allowed us to get a head start on the season, with our first broad beans already in the ground and coming along nicely.

We’re growing Aquadulce, a tried-and-tested variety that overwinters well. The first sowing went into the polytunnel on December 19th, and they’ve come through the colder months in great shape. Now, with the increasing warmth of the spring sun, they’re really starting to put on some growth. A second sowing was planted in late February, and those are just beginning to germinate. Both beds should provide us with an early harvest of broad beans in May.

Outside, our next round of broad beans will be sown in a couple of weeks in the main growing area. Once they’ve finished, that space will be sown with a short-term fertility-building mix, which will be grazed by sheep and left in place until next season—part of our ongoing commitment to improving soil health naturally.

After the polytunnel broad beans are harvested, those beds will be transitioned to our tomatoes and cucumbers. As always, we’ll be preparing them with Wooltiliser, as its high potassium content will give the tomatoes the nutrients they need to thrive when they start fruiting.

With the season kicking off, it’s great to see the benefits of the polytunnel already making a difference. We’re looking forward to a productive year ahead!
